a doghouse or a castle?

Published: Sat, 07/29/17

A friend stopped by the other day and
I told her the lotto was up to several
million dollars.

Even though I didn't buy a ticket,
I told her that if I won, I wouldn't
do anything different.

I'm living the dream.

I'm doing what I love.

I then added, "I might buy a vintage
Mercedes SL300 Gullwing car."

I've dreamed of owning one.

"That's material," she said.

I was quiet for a moment.

"Or I might consider buying a mansion
or a castle," I added.

I figured I could use the extra room.

"That's material, too," she said.

Again, I was quiet.

I wasn't sure how to tell my friend
that if you won several million dollars,
and spent some of it, that you were
bound to buy material things.

After all, we live in a material universe.

But here's the punchline:

The material IS the spiritual.

My friend was making the same mistake
virtually everyone makes: she was
unconsciously judging money as some
form of contamination.

It should be no surprise that my friend
is struggling financially.

At one point she said she couldn't afford
a new car payment, and yet minutes later
said she was receiving a check that would
cover at least two car payments.

But she didn't notice the discrepancy.

She still thinks (unconsciously) that money
is bad, material things are not spiritual,
and spending on yourself is a form of sin.

None of that is true.

All are beliefs.

Limiting beliefs.

It's a form of spiritual snobbery to think
money is not spiritual, too.

I'm not advocating the lotto and I'm
not urging you to be self-indulgent.

But I do think money is neutral.

It's a tool to fulfill your dreams.

It's like a hammer.

You can use it to build a doghouse or a castle.

The hammer is innocent.

Money is innocent.

I think you deserve to have a happy, healthy,
comfy life; with the ability to help others
around you, all with money.

I've given money to friends to help them with
the IRS or a struggling business; I've given
money to causes and people I believe in,
including complete strangers; I've donated to
homeless shelters and to a group to end poverty;
I've bought cars for family members; I've given
cars and guitars to friends; I've even funded a
bold movement to end homelessness.

And I buy a car, guitar or some other "material"
item for myself when I feel so inspired.

It's all good.

But you have to make peace with money in order
to allow it into your life, or else you will
unconsciously keep pushing it away.

Don't think my friend is an oddity.

You are her.

You have limiting beliefs, too.

And you probably don't see them.

If you are ready to get clear about your
beliefs around money and success, then
