Mistake?

Published: Tue, 04/15/14

In the lyrics book for my newest CD,
"Reflection," I have a quote,

"Honor they error as a hidden intention."

Sounds like something I'd say, doesn't it?

But I didn't say it.

It's actually the first "Oblique Strategy"
from a 1975 card deck called, "The Oblique
Strategies: Over One Hundred Worthwhile
Dilemmas," created by Brian Eno, a musician,
and his friend and fellow artist, Peter Schmidt,
who was a painter.

The Oblique Strategies started out as notes to
themselves to use as "prompts" in certain
working situations.

Interestingly, they didn't initially create
them together. Brian's were written on cards
and Peter kept his messages in a little book.

It was only later that they realized they'd
both arrived at similar concepts.

For example, "Honor they error as a hidden intention"
was Brian's, but they discovered Peter had formulated
a similar first message: "Was it really a mistake?"

They were quite surprised to find that, independently,
they had developed overlapping ideas that each used
as a guiding system of sorts.

Now here's the really cool part --

In an interview, Brian Eno explained how the Oblique
Strategies originated in the first place:

"The Oblique Strategies evolved from me being in a
number of working situations when the panic of the
situation - particularly in studios - tended to make
me quickly forget that there were others ways of working
and that there were tangential ways of attacking problems
that were in many senses more interesting than the direct
head-on approach. If you're in a panic, you tend to take
the head-on approach because it seems to be the one that's
going to yield the best results."

What Brian's talking about here is that the pressure of
time and money - trying to get something done while the
clock or money meter's ticking - can cause a sort of panic
(if not a full blown panic attack for some).

So they came up with a way to shift their mind away from
the sense of pressure and into a more open state.

I was shocked when I read this - because it describes
the same reasoning and functionality behind The Remembering
Process, which I've been using to blow my way through seven
albums at the speed of light.

Okay, well, that might be a stretch of time but I'm close...:-)

As we talk about in "The Remembering Process: A Surprising
(and Fun) Breakthrough New Way to Amazing Creativity,"
co-authored with Daniel Barrett and just released by
Hay House, this technique can be used in all kinds of
creative working situations:

"...you can use it for all types of creative or logical
thinking capacities, such as brainstorming, writing
and communication skills. You can win a chess match,
land a sale, or write a song from a relaxed, inspired,
and confident state of possibility."

Or, as in my case, you can learn to play the guitar,
write songs, sing, and record music. And then start
over with another instrument! (The saxophone)

You can reinvent yourself completely.

The beauty of the Remembering Process, like the
Oblique Strategies, is that you tap into other
realms of being in order to achieve your desire
more elegantly.

And why not?

There's simply no real reward for slugging our way
through, when, as the book suggests, "We can remember
that things do not have to be such a grind."

Remember?
