An optical illusion: You?

Published: Mon, 10/28/13

The other day I saw an interesting article
with photos on msn.com's front page about some
of the world's most amazing optical illusions.

My favorite image was a man who appeared to be
walking in the sky.

He was actually jumping into the Dnipro River
in Kiev.

An optical illusion occurs "when your eyes and
brain perceive something that is different from
the physical reality," like seeing a purple cow
standing in the shadows in the low light of dusk.

In other words, you think you're seeing one thing
when, really, it's something else. In most cases,
it'll make you do a double take and question what
you're seeing.

Optical illusions are simply "your eyes playing
tricks on you" - but they don't just happen when
someone snaps the shutter on a camera.

They're all around us.

In fact, I think the greatest optical illusion
sometimes is our own self.

In a way, we're like those images I saw where,
at a particular moment, we appear to be something
we're not.

From the outside, we look like we've got our life
all together in a neat pinned and tucked fashion.

On the inside, we're falling apart...

Some of us get used to operating behind this
façade fairly early in life and spend the rest
of our lives this way.

It becomes comfortable, secure and familiar -
even though it's not actually working for us.

We forget who we are...and it happens to the best
of us at one time or another.

My good friend and transformation specialist,
Bill Phillips, (who you'll have a chance to meet
and work with at my November event in Austin)
sees this all the time.

Bill's the creator behind the book, programs and
contest called, Body for Life, and is world famous
for his ability to help people transform their body,
their health, and their life.

I've had the opportunity to work with him personally
a number of times to achieve my own breakthroughs
in this area.

This year I completed a second 12-week program with him,
releasing 36 pounds and adding 15 pounds of muscle since
February.

I feel like Hercules and have the biceps to show it.
(Nope, it's not an optical illusion - they're real.)

Recently, Bill wrote a post on his site that said -

"I know there is one person reading this message
right now who...is quietly, privately worried and
frustrated with the layers of unhealthy body fat
that have covered what used to be a strong and
able body which felt young and energetic.

"This person is successful in other areas of their
life and they realize that being out of shape isn't
consistent with who they really are deep down inside."

In a sense, Bill's describing an optical illusion -
someone who isn't externally congruent with their
true inner self.

And it doesn't feel good when we operate this way.

This is why we seek transformation (and what you'll
experience in two days at my life-changing event) ...
because when we transform, all the parts of our self
realign so that we appear and behave differently in
the world - more authentic and real.

As fascinating as they may be, when it comes to optical
illusions, think purple cows, and the line made famous
from the poem of the same name:

"I'd rather see than be one."
